Sound Education: An ideal legacy, a father’s legacy.
A Father’s Legacy
My father is a firm believer in being educated, and this meant that my sisters and I may not have gotten the dresses we wanted, however, we certainly were not sitting at home when school resumed.
I was not happy about this system of his but I kept my complaints to a minimal level. I had to go to school, “no matter what”. When I was much older, I asked him why education was so important and he explained that it was the best legacy to give a child; that he wanted to die knowing he had made it possible for his children to take part and compete on a global scale.
Education is important. However, whenever people discuss the legacy they would leave for their children, several things make the list including wealth, good morals, connections, and strong family bonds among others. Interesting yet sadly, a solid education often gets mentioned last or totally omitted.
So, What Truly is Education?
Upliftment and Enlightenment
Education goes beyond an academic experience. Too many people believe that it is sitting in a classroom and listening to a teacher. This, however, is only a part. Education is a stepping stone to enlightenment. It prepares one’s mind for the future by teaching both theoretical and practical approaches. Education provides a training ground where an individual’s skills develop accordingly; where one makes friends and builds a network. Education strengthens one’s character.
Preparation
Educating a child is akin to giving them a roadmap to life. This prepares them for both now and the future and helps them make the important decisions that determine what their lives produce.
Take a moment to imagine your life without a solid educational background, and you would understand that you have a lot to be thankful for. This is because no amount of excellent morals, great connections or inherited wealth would be beneficial in the absence of a decent education. You can appreciate your parents and guardians for ensuring you got an education, however not everyone has the same story. Some of us are not as lucky. In your immediate environment, you can easily find children who wish they could go to school.
Sound Education: Our Role
While we wish education could be cost-free, it is necessary to realize it cannot just be. Hence we should remember the young child who also deserves an awesome legacy of a solid academic background. Let’s help by promoting sound child education in our little ways, starting from our immediate communities. It’s our collective legacy!
